Most umpires where similar gear to what a catcher would wear, especially behind the plate. However, one main difference is that many of this umpire gear is designed to fit below or underneath the apparel. This umpire gear consists of leg guards, a chest protector, and some sort of face mask, or helmet. Most of the time, umpires wear dark blue, or black to differentiate themselves from the players. That is why sometimes you will hear people in the stands or players hollering, "C'mon Blue, your screwing up the game!" Umpires in the field typically do not wear umpire gear, and many of them carry umpire accessories such as pitch counters or a home plate brush.
